Robotic Bariatric Surgery

Dr. Brad Bilton

Dr. Brad Bilton

Dr. Bradley D. Bilton received his graduate degree and medical doctorate in Louisiana. He then completed his residency program in General Surgery. During that time, he participated in research and is a published author and co-author. Following this he completed a fellowship in minimally invasive surgery (laparoscopic and endoscopic techniques).

After completing his fellowship in 2001 he moved to Tuscaloosa and joined University Surgical Associates. Upon his arrival he ushered in advanced minimally invasive surgery and these techniques continue to be the focus of his practice. Dr. Bilton continues to be involved in a wide array of General Surgery procedures as well. Dr. Bilton also became involved in training future physicians and surgeons during his tenure as an Associate Assistant Professor at the University of Alabama.

Shortly after his private practice career began, he obtained further training in bariatric surgical techniques (surgical weight loss). This has also become a major focus of his practice and has been since 2004. These techniques furthered his practice in minimally invasive surgery. Today he offers several surgical wt. loss options including gastric bypass, gastric banding, sleeve gastrectomy and other non-surgical forms of weight loss (such as the gastric balloon). These efforts allow surgeons to cure, reduce or avoid medical problems through surgical procedures.

More recently Dr. Bilton, with the help of Intuitive Surgical and a few key members of hospital administration, began the robotic General Surgery program at his current hospital. This program has brought even further minimally invasive techniques to the local hospital setting and joins several other specialties already offering robotic techniques. This program continues to grow with the help of many other collaborative surgeons.

This robotic platform allows Dr. Bilton to perform most if not all of the procedures he previously performed laparoscopically. The platform allows surgeons 3D views and full wristed motion and overall improved surgical ergonomics. In comes with an array of technology to assist the surgeon with even some of the most difficult cases (such as bariatrics, complex hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery and deep pelvis surgery).

Dr. Bilton is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is also a fellow of the ASMBS. He is, or has been, a member of several other surgical societies over time as well as participating in various local medical committees and administrative roles.

As a General Surgeon, Dr. Bilton performs a wide array of surgical procedures. These include, but are not limited to endocrine surgery (thyroid, parathyroid [also with minimally invasive techniques] and adrenal), solid organ (liver, spleen, pancreas), breast (benign and malignant as well as offering ultrasound and stereotactic mammatome techniques), all GI tract surgeries (benign and malignant and includes stomach, gallbladder, intestine, colorectal, hemorrhoid, anti-reflux procedures, etc). Also performed are complex and simple hernias of the abdominal wall. Dr. Bilton also performs endoscopic techniques such as upper endoscopy (EGD), colonoscopy, placement of feeding tubes and some interventional endoscopy. This is only a sample of procedures routinely performed by General Surgeons. Many of these techniques may be performed with laparoscopic and/or robotic techniques.

Dr. Bilton has over 16 years of general surgery experience since his graduation from LSU’s School of Medicine in 1994. For the past 10 years Dr. Bilton has been involved with advanced laparoscopic surgery and has been performing bariatric surgery since 2004.

Dr. Bilton also performs a wide array of general surgery procedures such as hernia repair, gallbladder removal and surgery for acid reflux. He also specializes in robotic surgery for both weight loss and general surgery.
